My first job as a graphic designer was with a small newspaper in North Carolina. It was there I learned the ins-and-outs of offset printing and prepress work. The crazy thing is when I started there, they were still pasting up page layouts, shooting film in a darkroom, masking negatives and burning plates. They even had to have all photographs shot into PMTs, until PMT paper went away and they got a flatbed scanner so that I could scan photos in and print them out on a postscript printer with the halftone applied. Eventually, they moved up to using an image setter and InDesign, but I’ll never forget my first taste of analogue print production.
